Whole 30 Progress

Good evening fellow readers! So, I believe I mentioned in a previous post that I was about to begin the Whole 30. No, this is not a diet and I have NOT cut calories. I'm eating lots of lean protein and veggies, as well as fruit and 'good' fats. Why am I doing this? Well, I made some not-so-healthy choices last week. While 85% of my meals were whole foods, the other 15% was crap, and my body started paying for it. I had done Paleo before, but I decided that Whole 30 would be a good reset (a little more strict than Paleo) for my system.

Sure enough, 2 days in and I'm looking and feeling good! Obviously my system does not respond well to grains or processed foods because this is seriously only a two-day progress shot. So, for those of you wondering what the Whole 30 is...

It's a 30 day 'challenge' that promotes healthy eating. Grains, dairy, legumes, sugars (real and fake), and processed foods are eliminated. Yes, it sounds scary, but what you are left with are natural, whole foods that your body needs. You can eat all the lean protein and vegetables you want as well as a moderate amount of fruit and fat (avocado, seeds, etc).

Nearly 70% of your immune system is located in your digestive system, which means that nutrition is key to health. Poor eating lends itself to many things people wouldn't normally think- acne, headaches, depression, allergies, arthritis, etc. The gut goes wayyyy beyond, well, the gut. By eliminating trigger foods, you are allowing your body to reset itself (not like a cleanse) and hopefully after the 30 days, will have adopted a healthier relationship with food.

My trigger foods are definitely sweets. And while I think my mug cakes and Paleo cookies are good for me, they just cause me to crave more sweets. By cutting them out for 30 days, most people's cravings are greatly reduced (if not eliminated) and you find yourself craving healthier foods or starting to see food as nourishment, not something to relieve your stress, etc. Last night I could have KILLED for something sweet (heck, even tea with honey sounded good but it's off limits!) so I did what the Whole 30 website suggested and asked myself if fish and broccoli sounded good. Well, it didn't. Therefore, that was my key indicator that I was NOT hungry, but in fact just craving a trigger food. So, I made myself some tea (no honey) and went to bed. Let's hope I can keep this up another 28 days!

For those interested in following my journey on a day-to-day basis, or wanting accountability, support, recipes, etc, I have a FREE Facebook group open to anyone and everyone..well, ladies only.. (no sales, no scams, just women trying to get healthy). Would love to have you!

  1. You are really disciplined. Good for you. Know what you mean about sweets causing cravings. I know first hand they do, but I am currently content with no longer eating junk sweets (ice cream, cakes, cookies). In time, maybe I will eliminate my PB balls and mug cakes. Thanks for the inspiration!
